Why do bearings need to be "sealed"?

As an indispensable key component in mechanical equipment, the performance and reliability of bearings directly affect the operational efficiency and lifespan of the entire equipment. Among the many factors that affect bearing performance, sealing technology is particularly important. It not only concerns the maintenance and leakage prevention of lubricating oil, but also involves preventing external pollutants from entering the bearing interior, thereby ensuring the stable operation and long-term durability of the bearing. Here are some introductions to bearing seals:
The importance of sealing:
Bearing sealing is an important device that prevents the leakage of bearing lubricants (oil or grease), as well as the intrusion of external dust, moisture, acid gas, and other harmful objects into the bearing cavity. Good sealing can keep the interior of the bearing clean, prevent metal surfaces from being corroded, and thus extend the service life of the bearing.
2. Type of sealing:
(1) Dust cover sealing: usually used in clean environments with low dust requirements, such as ordinary motors.
(2) Non contact sealing: such as skeleton rubber cover sealing, suitable for general clean environments, with good dust prevention effect.
(3) Low friction contact seal: made of nitrile rubber reinforced with steel frame, suitable for occasions such as gearbox bearings that require better sealing effect.
(4) Contact sealing: such as RS type sealing ring, reinforced by steel frame, generally using nitrile rubber, has good dustproof effect, but does not have waterproof effect.
3. Selection of sealing materials:
Choosing the appropriate sealing material is crucial according to different usage environments and requirements. For example, silicone rubber or fluororubber may be required in high-temperature environments, while polypropylene rubber may be chosen in low-temperature environments.
4. Design of sealing structure:
The design of the sealing structure needs to consider factors such as the type of bearing, speed, load, and installation space. For example, high-speed bearings may require the use of labyrinth seals to reduce the impact of wind.
In short, bearing sealing is an important link to ensure the normal operation of bearings. By selecting and using seals reasonably, the service life and reliability of bearings can be effectively improved. When selecting and applying bearing seals, actual working conditions and requirements should be fully considered to ensure the best sealing effect.
